Overview

This assignment involves preparing a 4,000-word in-depth case study focusing on one up and coming tourist destination of your choosing.

From this you are to create an in-depth case study on one sustainable issues of a particular business, discuss and present a strategy in which to deal with this sustainable issue applying the CSR principles in the tourism industry.

Alongside this, choose an established tourist destination in Spain and a specific type of tourism for both destinations (Events, Historical/cultural traditions, Wildlife Tourism, package holidays) so you can compare both using the theories and concepts covered in class.

The criteria for each destination are as follows:

1. Your chosen destination – A tourist destination which is up and coming.

2. Spain – An established tourist destination.

Both destinations could be either from where you have visited or where you are from.

This must be submitted in Microsoft word format. You must include appropriate in-text citations and references according to CCCU Harvard referencing.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK – WHAT YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO DO?

Submit a case study incorporating

  • A definition of both Tourism Impacts and Sustainable Development.
  • Choose two destinations, one in Spain and another country of your choice and conduct research, analyse and present findings and recommendations on one sustainable issue and how it could be mitigated against at your destination.
  • Outline both destinations’ current position in relation to theories and concepts covered in class (Irritation Index etc.).
  • Compare both destinations and their types of holidays on offer and discuss their differences.
  • Outline of both the negative and positive Tourism impacts of both destinations linked to a specific type of tourism (outlined above).
  • Focus on one sustainable issue of a particular type of Tourism in destination 1. Your chosen destination. Then discuss and present a strategy to mitigate against, applying CSR principles in the tourism industry

Utilise a wide variety of research materials (4,000 words).

 

Types of Tourism to choose from:

Your chosen destination must be linked to a specific type of tourism (see list below). You must conduct research, analyse and present findings and recommendations on one sustainable issue and how it could be mitigated against.

1. Events (Mega sports events Tourism (Olympics, Camp Nou – Barcelona, Spain, Wembley Stadium, Krakow Cracovia Marathon), gigs/venues (Glastonbury, O2 Arena, Goa Carnival, Shigmo Festival, Brasov International Contemporary Theatre Festival) etc.

2. Historical /cultural traditions (e.g. Queens Jubilee, Spiritual, Religious events e.g. Roman Apulum Festival, Transylvania International Film Festival) etc.

3. Wildlife Tourism, Adventure, Environment (K2 Base Camp Trek, Old Silk Road, Karakorum Wildlife Tour, Thailand & Laos Adventure, South Pantanal & Bonito Eco-Tours) etc.

4. Package Holidays (two-week family package holidays in the city, by the sea or in the countryside).

Research and discuss different factors which impact the destination and outline emerging situations (health, political, environmental etc..) using different analysis theories and concepts.

Utilise images/photos, maps, graphs, tables etc. to assist you in clearly conveying your research and demonstrate your knowledge.

 

Additional Information required to support completing the tasks above Important:

  • The task requirement is a case study not an essay or reflective journal. You must therefore ensure that your structure, outline, content, style and presentation accord with academic writing conventions for a report.
  • Headers, bullet points, pictures and graphs, bold or italics fonts should be used where appropriate. Table of contents is also required.
  • Ensure appropriate formatting. For example, you should use 12-point font size, 1.5 line spacing and distribute your text evenly between margins.
  • You must use the correct Canterbury Harvard Referencing conventions for your in-text citations and reference list. Please refer to the Canterbury Harvard Referencing Guide.
  • You must research, read, apply and reference the core and recommended resources for the module as well as additional academic resources.
  • Make sure you proofread and edit your work prior to final submission to avoid grammar, spelling, punctuation, and in-text citation mistakes as well as to ensure that you have covered everything.
  • You must use a minimum of 20 sources including textbooks, journals and other academic/credible published and web sources. The module handbook states 15
  • Do not use Wikipedia, unverifiable blogs or any software to generate answers.
  • Marking criteria is available in Moodle.
  • Make sure you adhere to the required word count of the case study report (4,000) +/- 10%, as 10 marks will be deducted from your total grade, if you exceed the required word count (i.e., if you exceed 4400 words)

Chapter One

(800 words)

Chapter one: Introduction, definitions and overview of your case study (800 words)

Outline the Aims and objectives of this case study.

Define Tourism Impacts, Sustainable Development, Ecotourism and Ethical Tourism with a brief example for each.

Introduce and outline a destination in Spain and your chosen destination and specific type of tourism including attractions.

Outline where both destinations are in relation to the Doxey’s Irritation Index Model and Butler’s Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC).

Outline what you are going to cover in your case study.

Chapter Two (1000 words) Chapter two: Origins of sustainable tourism (1000 words)

Outline the origins of Sustainable Tourism.

Describe the relationship between sustainability, ecotourism and ethical tourism.

Define and discuss overtourism, consumption and the Wicked Problem.

Outline and discuss the range of Tourism Impacts (Positive/Negative). This can be presented in a table.

Discuss the difference between sustainable tourism and mass tourism.

Chapter Three

(800 words)

Chapter three: The nature of your selected destinations – 800 Words

  • Outline the various routes (including time and cost) from the UK (any city) to your two destinations.
  • Summarize your chosen type of tourism in both selected destinations.
  • Summarize the key tourist impacts both positive and negative at both destinations (this can be in tables). Then analyze the key differences.
  • Identify your destinations key leading tourism stakeholders and their corporate social responsibility, their future aims, objectives and vision to sustain the tourism sector. This can be presented in a table.
Chapter Four (800 words) Chapter four: Challenges to implementing sustainability in tourism – 800 Words

  • Identify common challenges when implementing sustainable tourism?
  • Select and discuss one sustainable issue of a particular business at both chosen destinations, compare, discuss and present the key challenges faced to address this issue.

 

Chapter Five (600 words) Chapter five: Conclusion – 600 words

  1. Summary of the key findings from the case study
  2. Provide a detailed outline of your recommendations about how to address your chosen sustainable issue of a particular Tourism type at your chosen destination, ensuring it aligns with the destinations future plans, stakeholders and CSR principles in the tourism industry.

  1. List all the sources you have used using Harvard convention it is CCCU Harvard. That includes every website you visited, journal/articles, textbooks and other resources you have used. If you have not used the information but just read it, do not include that in the list.
  2. Your list should contain at least 20 pieces of research. All resources count as a separate piece of research.

This assignment should be submitted electronically via Moodle (module tutors will discuss this process with you during class time).

  • You must submit your work in Word document format of the case study report.
  • You can submit your work as many times as you like before the submission deadline. If you do submit your work more than once, your earlier submission will be replaced by the most recent version.
  • Please ensure that you have submitted your work in the correct link on the assessment tab. Also note that students may be penalised for submitting their assessments in the wrong link.
  • Once you have submitted your work, you will receive a digital receipt as proof of submission, which will be sent to your forwarded e-mail address (provided you have set this up). Please keep this receipt for future reference, along with the original electronic copy of your assignment.
  • You are reminded of the University’s regulations on academic misconduct, which can be viewed on the University website: Academic Misconduct Policy. In submitting your assignment, you are acknowledging that you have read and understood these regulations.

If you fail this assessment, you will have to resubmit an Individual assignment.
