CYP5005: Multi Agency Working – Simulation Case study
Case Study: The Roberts Family
Background
John is a single parent caring for 5 children. His wife died as a result of complications after the birth of their youngest daughter, Sophie, who is now aged 12 months. Sophie was born prematurely and stayed in hospital for 10 weeks before being allowed home.
The other children are:
- Matthew aged 16 (yr 11)
- Helen aged 13 (yr 9)
- David aged 11 (yr 6)
- Tom aged 6 (yr 2)
Once Sophie was home, John decided that the family should move house, he found being in the family home too painful. John owns his own business and as a result he often works long hours. His wife was a stay-at-home mum.
Context
After his wife’s death John went back to work. At first the grandparents (his mother and father and his wife’s mother) were there to support him and the children.
However, the wife’s mother has been too ill (for the past 6 months) to help. His parents both still work and are over an hour’s drive away.
John is increasingly becoming less able to cope. He has been relying on his two elder children to take on the role of ‘mother and father’ to the younger ones. He is becoming a more distant parent, sometimes returning home smelling of alcohol, after the younger ones have been put to bed by Matthew and Helen.
Matthew is studying for his GCSE’s and hoping to start college. He has begun to miss school. He has begun to miss school and his behaviour at school is becoming increasingly belligerent. Helen still attends school but is quiet and withdrawn. After school she collects Sophie after doing some of her homework. Her schoolwork is suffering, and she does not seem to spend any time with friends. The school has tried to contact John, without success.
David and Tom are both in a local primary school. They are dropped off at ‘Before and After school club’ and collected from it by another local parent. The children tell this parent that their older siblings look after them until their father gets home. David and Tom’s school have noticed a change in their behaviour. They have been more withdrawn. However, although they have been in touch with John, he has said they are fine and probably just grieving.

The assignment task for the module Multiagency working (CYP5005) is a report regarding a simulated case conference. The report should include a reflective account. The Panopto featuring the case conference can be found on the Moodle site. I recommend that the report is constructed in six sections. The sections include

Section 1 – Title Page (not included in the word count)
This section should contain the following: –

Section 2 – Introduction (200 words)
This introductory section provides opportunity for the writer to set the scene. So, provide some context for the meeting. The simulated case conference demonstrates multiagency working, therefore, some conceptual analysis regarding multiagency work is pertinent to your introduction. Define multiagency work and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach to professional support for families. Next, the case conference featured in the Panopto is a multiagency meeting concerning early help. Because the case conference focuses on early help, it is useful to define early help and offer some underpinning legislation and policy (Every Child Matters plus Children Act 2004).
Section 3- Main Discussion (1,200 words)
This section should focus on a detailed discussion regarding the simulated case conference. It is useful to provide some description of the event, so, what issues were the family experiencing? Which professionals were involved (be careful here do not use too many words purely on a description of the event).
Once you have provided some insights outlining this case conference, consider this meeting as an example of multiagency work in more detail, additional factors to consider include:
What are the family’s needs and what are the effects of these needs on family members (actual or potential). Up to the case conference, how are the family’s needs being addressed by the family themselves or by other people?
What forms of support are being offered professionals at the case conference?
What examples of professional collaboration do you observe and what do you think is contributing to staff working well with each other?
Do you observe any tensions amongst the professionals featured in the simulated case conference, for example, budgets, different perspectives and priorities, possible power struggles.
What additional barriers to support do you recognise, for example, communication difficulties, the ability of the family to engage with services.
Are sufficient resources being allocated to the family? Do you perceive any unmet needs?
Consider also evaluation, what steps are taken in the simulated case conference to evaluate the progress of multiagency working, it is useful to discuss here in more general terms, the value of evaluation in multiagency work.
Ensure, you cite enough reliable literatures in your discussion. Very paragraph should have at least two or more evidences to back your discussion.
Section 4- Reflective section (400 words)
In this section, provide your own reflection on multi-agency work. Having participated in a module that focuses on this approach to helping people, consider… what do you feel are the most challenging aspects of multiagency work? Why is that so? and how do you feel your learning helps prepare you for this approach to professional practice? You can include specific examples of your formal learning, for example, a topic you have developed your knowledge of. You may also discuss experiential learning, for example, you may have observed a leader who worked in a collaborative and inclusive way and this inspired you. When discussing experiential learning, you must ensure the identities of those involved are protected.
End your reflective section with some insights into your developmental plans, for example, you may prioritise a particular form of work experience.
Section 5 – Conclusion (200 words)
This is your chance to bring all the themes of your report together and make some recommendations.

Your report must include references from pertinent literature, especially academic journals.
The Reference list must adhere to APA style. The APA Standard encompasses that the references should be complete, indented, arranged alphabetically, and the journal name and book titles be italicized.
Relevant examples include.
▪ Literature that examines multiagency working
▪ Literature connected to multi-agency working such as power struggles, presenting an argument, effective communication skills
▪ Literature linked specifically to the simulated case conference, for example, early help and literature that reflects relevant challenges families face such as bereavement, being a young carer, alcohol dependency
▪ Insights from legislation and policy pertinent to multiagency work are also valuable. Examples include Every Child Matters, Children Act 2004.
